Childers Monday 24th November 2008

By Tim and Bev

We arrived at Chookie Farm with great trepidation last Saturday (it’s a big thing to be responsible for someone’s home and animals) and met Britt and their 8 year old daughter, Brea for the first time, having already met Brett and their son, Tobias previously on our way to Woodgate Beach. They showed us around the house and we were also shown how the animals (3 horses, 23 chooks, 1 peacock and 2 cats) were fed and watered, had a meal and a few drinks with them before hitting the sack.

Next morning Brett and Britt were understandably stressed trying to pack and get 2
children ready to go. We minded the children so
they could have one last horse ride before they left. They finally got away about 11am for their friends place on the Sunshine Coast and were then going to Brisbane for their flight on Monday. Bev and I were exhausted by the time they left as they were all full on and it was a relief to have the place to ourselves to just chill out in.
The house is a lovely 3 bedroom open plan house with large windows that allows the breeze to flow through from front to back. It has no air conditioning but the ceiling fans seem to be quite adequate at present. There is a new above ground pool that has just been installed which will be good in the coming hot weather. The farm is located next to a light aircraft field so we can watch the planes landing and taking off for a bit of entertainment. Brett said that if we were bored we could take a folding chair to the Bruce Hwy side of the property and count the different number plates of the vehicles that passed. (I think they did that to keep the kids occupied :-) ) Hope it doesn’t get to that)
The horses have to be fed in the correct order as they have a hierarchy and become very aggressive to the horse that is fed out of turn. They can be a bit intimidating if they sense that you are not confident in handling them and so far I appear to be bluffing them but in reality they are quite daunting for someone who has never been close to horses before.
There are big goannas on the property but we have not sighted any yet but we have seen kangaroos that are here also.
We are here now for 7 weeks and are just going to enjoy the different lifestyle that country living is to us.
